Oh I loved The Devil's Thief!! You know how in some books it takes a while for them to get to the real meat of the story and for anything exciting to happen? Well, not so with this one. It jumps right on in there at the beginning with Julianna trying to swipe a priceless family pearl and getting a gun drawn on her by one very nekkid Alasdair who decided to, well, make things interesting if she really wants his pearl! And things wind up pretty damn hot and heavy... in the most delicious way <g>
Everything was a little unique with Julianna and Alasdair after that first "meet". She got her pearl in a sexy deal with Alasdair that he's really unhappy about the next morning when he realizes what he's done. And ooohhh you may want to smack him around a little with how he behaves right there at the start. Lord knows I wanted to after his reaction. It's a pretty entertaining ride as everyone tries to get the pearl back and put things to right and Alasdair brings his friends in to help search for his mystery woman.
Julianna was a great heroine even with a rather head shaking TSTL moment there at the end. I really liked her and that she went for what she wanted or needed. She's not shy at all about her desires either which was nice to see. She's a pretty hysterical thief and just terrible at it but lordy it makes you love her even more. And Alasdair, after I got over wanting to hurt him, was excellent as well. Things are really hot and spicy between them for a mainstream historical and oh my word I loved that! Kane writes some killer intimate scenes that will definitely leave you with a satisfied smile on your face.
He broke the kiss. “Julianna,” he said desperately, pressing kisses along her cheekbone and then her hairline. “Juli.” His voice was ragged. “You are the very air I breathe, the blood in my veins. All that is right in my world. If you ever do something so bloody stupid again, I will turn you over my knee and spank the living daylights out of you.”
Julianna burst into surprised laughter, but he could hear how shaky it was. “Promises, promises,” she whispered. As much as I enjoyed the main characters the support cast was what completely won me over. My favorite part were the guys. Alasdair, Hil (*swoon*) and Roger. They've known each other forever and it really shows. They call it like it is, knock each other around and totally have each other's backs even if they're giving each other hell the whole time. The friendship really shines through and is delightful to watch. Then there's Mr Wiley who had a fairly minor role but somehow completely won my heart. He's not entirely on the up and up but he's got spirit and just a way about him that left me wanting to know more. Really all of the secondary characters were great at that and have me really looking forward to hearing their stories.
If you enjoy fun, steamy historicals that are a little different from your usual storyline and that have both humor and heart then The Devil's Thief is one you definitely need to check out.
